Miller admits his transition from the peach trees and winding roads of the Southeast to the skyscrapers of New York City took a great deal of adjustment. After finishing his undergraduate degree, Miller studied music at Mannes College of Music in Manhattan. It wasn't until his senior year of high school that he joined his high school chorus, eventually taking his talent to sing for a year at Paine College in Augusta, and later Morehouse College, following a transfer. But his formal music training began when his mother approached his middle school band director in church, signing Miller up to learn alto saxophone. 'It's just another moment in our everyday lives that just reminds us that we're more alike than we are different and (that) we live in a great country.'Īs is often customary with musicians in the South, Miller grew up surrounded by traditional music in church. 'I think it's just one more moment where we can, as a collective body, come together and kind of reflect, give thanks, and look forward - to be appreciative of the things that we have.
